Thursday March 9
th
was the day of our
annual
Thank
a
Volunteer/Welcome to
Corrigin event. This
year it was attended
by about 30 people, all
volunteers. We started
the evening in Miss B’s
Park, watching the
clouds darken and
approach. Then down
it came! After waiting
for an easing of the downpour, we dashed into the
Town Hall to continue the festivities. We hadn’t been
there long when the power went out. But we
persevered – just like our volunteers do.
Our volunteers support our community by running all
of our sporting clubs, manning our ambulances,
fighting our fires, running our museum, tidying our
town and carrying out a myriad of other essential
functions. They listen to our children read, perform
handyman services for our seniors and run our Red
Cross Shop. Without them, our community would not
be what it is and those in it would have less fulfilled
lives. My very grateful thanks to each and every
volunteer in our community – we would be much the
poorer without you.
However, many of our organisations are being run by
volunteers who are aging. These wonderful people
have contributed so much to our lives over a great
many years, but they can’t continue forever. We
need some succession planning to happen! Without
bringing some younger people onto the team some
of these organisations are in danger of folding. And
they are all important. And when I say “younger” I
don’t necessarily mean 20 year olds, or 30 year olds
or even 40 year olds – each organisation has its own
attractions and will be of interest to different age
groups.
I’m not sure how we achieve this. We don’t want
older members to resign or retire but we need to
attract younger ones as well. It was really pleasing
on that night to see the members of Corrigin Fire and
Rescue represented by 4 or 5 young men in their late
teens and twenties. Well done to that organisation for
recruiting so well !
”Please keep your
mind open to
opportunities
to volunteer for your
community
– we need you !”
Thanks to Heather and Pippa for arranging the
Thank a Volunteer function, and for being there
throughout the evening. Thanks also to Rob and
Frances Paull and Crs Hickey, Pridham and
Dickinson for your assistance as well.
Most of our closed roads have been opened up since
the February rainfall event although we are still
waiting for approval from WANDRRA to commence
major repair work. Staff have been doing their best to
make roads safe until such work can be carried out.
Thanks and congratulations to our very competent
staff who work very hard for us.
Further rain in the last couple of weeks has seen an
increase in activity around farm sheds and lots of
burning when conditions have allowed. I’m sure all
fingers are firmly crossed in the lead-up to the
seeding season.
